arrival city 09/29/2010
listened to doug saunders being interviewed by Matt Galloway on the CBC metro morning podcast today, about his new book, Arrival City. i wish i'm in canada right now so that i can pick one up! (the book is not available in the US until next year.) in the interview, saunders talked about how Toronto, as a city of neighbourhoods made of ethnic enclaves - little italy, koreatown, etc etc - is a successful model of a stable city of migrants which should serve as an example to the rest of the world. all this is incredibly timely for me, as i'm currently finishing my master's thesis on San Francisco's Japantown, and working with Prof. Michel Laguerre on his theories of the Global Ethnopolis. reading-wishlisted. st. lawrence market and the distillery: one of my favourite weekend haunts of toronto. looking at my photographs from one year ago makes me regret not having had time to visit the market again while i was home for the holidays. i am back in california, and preparing for a new semester -- it is going to be an even busier one, being my second and last semester, and also because i will be a graduate instructor for an undergraduate class on drawing and visual representation. i'm excited and a bit nervous; if nothing else, i hope that i will be able to pass on my passion for drawing to my students. it's only been a week, but i'm already missing toronto and everyone back home. though i must admit that it IS nice to be able to go for a long run outdoors again! sketchbook january 9th 01/08/2010
don't know why, but i've been drawing lots more people lately. i went with m. to the gladstone hotel for the drop-in life drawing session this past wednesday evening, and while everyone else was concentrating on the model's body and muscles and movements, i kept on focusing on his facial features, trying to capture his anguished expression on paper. there's just something so terribly beautiful about the human face. | welcome! My name is Lichia; this is my online creative journal where I document ideas, inspirations, processes and everyday life. categoriesAll archivesDecember 2011 copyright2006-2012 by Lichia Liu.
